Maybe because, the Great State of Califo-nia
does add such referendums to the State Constitution
creating what may be the longest, State Constitution

Trust Maine to do it otherwise. And Vermont.
Then again isn't Virginia still a commonwealth, technically?

Federalism.
Is there another country in the world that gets it?
Maybe Australia, I don't know. Canada? Sincere question.

How can you call these people Christians just because they use the Bible as an excuse? They have no historical affiliations with any of the seven churches established by His disciples, and they emphatically reject His command to "do unto others as ye would have others do unto you," so it is incorrect to call them Christians in any real sense. That they do call personal attention to their acts of "holiness" expecting public acclamation is true and that they are the first to cast stones and look minutely for moats in others' eyes is also true, but He never called such people Christians, I think the term He used was "hypocrits"; why shouldn't you use it.

OK. I am unaware of Maine's election technicalities.
But let's not let a technically overshadow the fact that a minority of the State's population (about 300,000 out of about 1.3 million) has legalized intolerance and discrimination and taken away a right that was granted to the people by the State.

This time that right was same-sex marriage, which you may or may not support. But what's next? What rights will The Intolerants seek to destroy next. Will the people of every State go to the polls and enjoy their right to vote? So far it appears that sufficient radicals care enough to get to the polls and vote that they are in control.

When TV and Inet voting polls are taken the one thing they always ask if you a) support or b) oppose something, like same-sex marriage. They don't seem to ask c) I don't care. It's the "I don't cares" of this country that are permitting those who do care to impose their will. True, it is the will of those who vote.

New Rule: Require that no referendum, proposition, etc. is implemented unless a majority (or in some cases greater) of registered voters vote to enact it.

How many registered voters are in Maine. What percentage of registered voters voted to enact discrimination against same-sex marriage? My guess is that the referendum would not be enacted with only 300,000 votes. This change would eliminate the Tail Wagging The Dog effect that we now have.
In fact , I like this idea so much I think movements need to be started to make this so.
