STATE OF MIND

Today, mom asked to be driven to 264 E. Orange st. to visit the house she said she used to live in. It was rather an impossible request since mom and I presently live at 264 E. Orange st. I drove her to 264 W. Orange st and upo seeing it said, " I recall living there." She never lived there. Oh well, it was a short, late afternoon outing for her, and at least, here, gas is less than $3.00 a gallon.

Someday, I'll claim my kinship to Kristoff, who is rumored to be a Bill Gates' relation, and I'll be living in the lap of luxury

Tell Bill the Gatekeeper I have given mom a new nick...yoyo. Monday mom went to the Community Hospital complaining that she had a stroke. They held her two hours and released her. Her ER doc told me,in front of mom, "your mom has severe Dementia, Alzhitmers and Sundown Syndrome. She DID NOT want to hear that.

Yesterday she was normal . Today about 4:45pm she asked me to wheel her into her bedroom so she could search her dresser for her second pair of glasses (she only owns one pair). I left her there and returned to my computer. Three minutes later she's yelling she had broken her hip. I ran in to find her on the floor. I lifted her up and put her back in the wheelchair. She had gotten up to move around the room (without calling me first) and tripped, falling on the bed and then the rug floor. I called 911. The paramedics say probably nothing broken from their observations but transported her to St. Bernadine's Hospital to get an x-ray to be sure. I am awaiting a call in next few hours from hospital to tell me that she's fine and to come get her. I'll let you know what happens when I found out.

I called the hospital at midnight since they hadn't called me by then. All they said was, "we're holding her overnight for evaluation so call us in the morning."

Remember Mom has many neurons left - and would like to go over her stuff in the drawers from time to time. Things that she can enjoy - for short moments - you can keep track of. What doctors say is not Gospel, and what suggestions they can make to improve the situation - can be helpful also, but no ideas and no suggestions from them is not acceptable.
As far as Hips braking is concerned, there are special padding - pants that are called "Hip Protectors". I saw also something of that sort in Dr Leonards Cathalog but any Medical Supply Store carries those.
A broken Hip is not a simle thing. I was at sea and my neighbor came on the line when I called home. She had walked the two dogs when we had that bad ice rain. Well one dog went one way and one the other. 10 days later I came home to take her home from the hospital. On the phone the nurses or someone told me that they just put a pin in. Gosh no, they cut the whole thing off and put a metal hip in. Take care about MOM so she stays busy and happy and so will You. N3RF

Mom has a "slight hair fracture" on her left hip. The hospital is transferring her to Legacy, a convelesant hospital for two weeks to allow her hip to mend. I only agreed to it because (1) it's temporary 2-3 weeks at most and (2) I don't want to clean crap out of her bed everyday for 2-3 weeks since she's not allowed to walk.

I go after conservatorship tomorrow.

Do the conservatorship ASAP - good move. In the meantime, we all need a break from such things as caretaking, which can be extremely taxing. Take it as a respite, and relax a bit.

Recently my mother, who is 92+ and lives 500-miles from me, fell and broke her pelvis. So off to the hospital and then a rehab center. It was also very obvious from comments by the medical staff that her mental condition had deteriorated very badly due to Alzheimer's. She had been in an assisted living type place with a large suite of rooms, but it was clear that she needed to be relocated to a nursing home where she would get more care and closer supervision as she was getting extremely forgetful of simple things like changing her clothes and combing her hair, etc.

I knew that she would be upset by any move to a new and unfamiliar place, but since she had already been hospitalized and then moved to a rehab center, I felt that it was the right time to change her living situation to one more suited to her condition.

It is not easy to see your parent in such a state. She could barely recognize me when I visited her, but I was the one who did not recognize her until the staff pointed her out!

The lastest reports indicate that she is not progressing. Her memory problems preclude any attempts at teaching her how to use a walker or a wheel chair. She has no short term memory at all. How sad.

So I understand what you are going through.

I picked up the forms for Conservatorship today. Wow over 30 pages to fill out. This may take a bit

Mom has been in hospital over two weeks now which means I've had all that time off . However, she's getting verry depressed and I don't want to lose her because she gives up hope or feels abandoned, so I'm in process of trying to get her released this week.

It's weird but, I think I miss the grindstone.

I'd be glad to Wolf. The only problem is that when you're 92, I'll be 98. I don't know who will be looking after whom.

I will tell you both this, if your both still alive at that age I would be most happy to take care of you two old goats.

Will I still be here then? YES I am going to live forever as death is overrated.
