I must admit you ended at a good spot; the story really needs nothing added, it's an excellent open-ended ending as is.

After reading this, I'm looking forward to anything more from you. Your style is great, your mechanics are fine, and you have given us not just a fantasy (like I tend to write... I'm one shallow son of a bitch, I think, with my stories), but a slice of humanity pie.
And it tastes yummy.
Please do continue to feed us your filling stories; I (and I assure you, many others) are looking forward to it!
