I read tonight that the Palestinian Authority is seeking to become a non-member state of the United Nations. Will someone clue me in to what is a 'non-member state'?
I'd say they should seek full membership.

I think it would be like the south Sudan before they became a new country, a place that is not a country looking for country status or at least being recognized as being separate.

Which Palestinian government?
Gaza or the West Bank.
It is a Taiwan or China problem.
Without a national government, let Jordan represent their interests.
The Muslim Berber and Turk can manage a relatively tolerant, democratic nation.
Why can't the Arab? One of those cultural things ala Romney?
So Un-P.C. but, true.

There is no comparison betwen the Republic of Chna and this bandit regime currently in charge of Peking with Palestine. Shame on the UN for accepting these neighborhood gangsters as the gpvermemt of a leitmate polity. So be it.

There's two non-Jewish groups vying for power:
Hezbollah (which translates as Party of God) and the PLO (Palestine Liberation Org).
One claims the West Bank and the other claims Gaza.
Getting status as a "non-member state" would give one of those two groups a head's up as a nation. In practical terms that what this move at the UN is all about. A round about method of getting recognition as a country or state without making concessions to Israel.
Remember people, all that is preventing a peace treaty IS (What is affectionately referred to as) The Status of Jerusalem.
That is the hardest problem there has been, ever, to reach a peace treaty. Arafat was unable to commit when Clinton tried. Netanyahu is unable to commit for many of the same reasons. The leader who makes the deal has to stay in office and maintain a government for the deal to work.
That's it. When both sides are strong enough politically to sit down and hammer out the Status of Jerusalem, all other issues fall into place. Every other nation that counts will stand by that agreement. Who would dare after all the pain and agony over hte decades say that an agreement reached by the parties wasn't right? No One.
There is the entire situation in simple terms.
“They also call it the Winged Isle. Some say it is because the island, if seen from above, would look like butterfly wings. And I do not know the truth of it.” Then, “ ‘And what is truth?’ said jesting Pilate.” From: The Truth Is A Cave In The Black Mountains by Neil Gaiman.

Dave,
They have been unable to reach that agreement in all of these years. What would lead us to think they can do it now?
Let Palestine be under or the same as "Jordon".
Ethnically, tribally, genomically they are most similar.
Treating Palestine as a responsible nation is absurd at this time.
Absurd and pleasing to Liberals. <sigh>
Moi
No other country can impose a settlement on the PLO or Israel
It just won't happen. Both sides would reject it.
And the PLO was offered the possibility to exist as part of Jordan or Lebanon and turned it down.
They want the land that was traditionally known as Palestine.
Like I said, when Clinton was in office, Arafat did not have the political power to sign a treaty and remain in power for more than a few hours.
Currently, Netanyahu's government would fall if he dared make a the deal that everyone knows must be made. AFter all, his coalition is composed of parties against the treaty, ever...
And so we keep them at a distance and out of trouble until someone has the political power to act.

Maybe the U.N. should recognize the West Bank then nuke Hezbollah![]()

These are mafias. Hardly governments.
And different families control East and West Palestine.
The Palestinians I know would just, mostly like to live in peace
allowed to go about their lives unafraid. It is the governments/mafias
that make life rough.
Solution: You are now part of Jordon.
The mafias may not like it but, I believe the people would after a year of peace.
The mafias would be given the opportunity to join the
police or military or be declared, criminal as any para military organization.
