A good topic of American history appeared in the weather thread
It seemed to have a vitality soooooo
Why not create a thread for discussion of the Politics of American History.
Remember, we are not interested in Herstory, only His.

First up.
That most remarkable of American periods, most similar to lebensraum but,
what was the world gonna do. And we felt good about ourselves doing it.
Manifest Destiny.
Previous uploads from weather thread, regarding America's water reserves up north.

It begins -
What part of Manifest Destiny don't you understand.
The Lord placed water up north for the future needs of the Great American Nation.
It was Manifested before any 49th parallel.
We need only recognize the Destiny determined at the Creation planned for us in this time.
Can it be any more plain?

Truly, James Knox Polk is my Number 1 favorite President.
An over looked extremely effectual one term President.
Although I do not think I can tap the Spirit of Bob3 to write Bob-esquely
How did I do explaining Manifest Destiny?
It reads to me like anything I have read from that great era in America's past.

Manifest Destiny was the product of the Christian justification of the westward expansion of America. Basically, it was from 1820 to 1860 at the start of the Civil War. At some point there was also a movement within it to take charge of the northern hemisphere of the Americas, I believe, which never appeared, except for a few notable exceptions.

The whole expansion thing ended with the so-called "Steward's Folly" in which we bought the rights to Alaska from Russia. That was about the end of the idea, and the expansion.

To reply "How'd I do?"
I say, author something in the style of Manifest Destiny and see if you
can get into the first person present tense of it, like a Passover Seder.
Liberating our northern water reserves or whatever.

Reagan also invoked Manifest Destiny about our land, between two oceans, destined, etc.

Sounds like "liberating" means stealing...Are we speaking of our frugal neighbors to the North; Canada. The true north, proud and free. Now that we've managed to wreck a good portion of what was manifested to us through Liberation, we look elsewhere to steal resources..How bout this: Clean the filth that enters our open sewers that we call streams and rivers...How about protecting what we have....and reduce the population to a sustainable size? Before we resort to stealing more land, maybe we should try these options first..Just my 2 cents Jackie

We tried to push North with our Manifest Destiny, but got pushed back. We took Hawaii, Guam, and the Philippines, expanding way beyond the continental USA and only gave back the Philippines after WWII. We might call it Manifest Destiny. Others might call it Imperialism or theft.

Of course, the grandest theft of them all was the theft of two whole continents from their native inhabitants.

With the rape of its land through exploitation of the tar sands, Canada has no warranted criticism of Alaska, not that I'm justifying the destruction of the environment anywhere to profit Big Oil.

O.K., everyone. Let us not start a dispute between the U.S. and Canada again. We cannot afford to build a WALL along such a long, long border.

As a note, I wonder how having a border the length of the U.S. - Canadian border between the U.S. and Mexico might change Texan politics?

When no one calls the bluff - -

So America assimilated Hawaii. An independent nations with European and Japanese embassies.
There was no one nearby.

When America took its fleet into Manila Bay for an easy victory over the Spanish,
the Kaiser blew his stack. Y'see his Imperial German Asiatic fleet was a short distance away at Tientsin I believe, and Kaiser Willy thought his Admiral should have taken on the Americans because - the German fleet was more modern then the American fleet in the Philippines.

Thinking about it, it seems only Russia from the 1700's to today had a similarly successful period of expansion.
Not manifested by the Lord. A big difference.

The Mexican American War was a product of Manifest Destiny mania.
For a good time, read up on the "Spot Resolution" offered by war opponent,
Congressman Abraham Lincoln.
If Mexico would have acknowledged the Independent State of Texas entered
the United States of America, the war might never have happened.
If Spain had just evacuated Cuba in 1898, they might have gotten to keep some of their stuff.
And if our manifested fresh water reserves are obstructed from the great nation of the Americas,
well; just look to history.
BTW the average person of Canada is now worth more then the average American.
It just happened. They out value us. I do hope we have a treaty of military cooperation.

Sneaky 'Mericans, crossin' our border. You see em everywhere. Waiting outside of Canadian Tire Stores, jostling to be picked up by someone who needs a project done. Roving gangs of cowboy hat wearing illegals, terrorizing our streets. Takin' the jobs of us god fearing Canadians. Leaching off our system. And that language they speak? Learn to speak Canadian, eh? In all seriousness, No, not so much. We do have to take precautions that we don't accept fake Canadian health care cards, and that Americans are not coming here to abuse our health care system. There can be a lucrative market for people to sell their Canadian care cards to Americans, so Americans can come here and use our heath care system when the US one fails, but that is a topic for another thread.
