    smokes Islamist Egypt

No hysterics. There is no reason to fear Egypt's Islamist government then there was to fear the German, Christian Democrats who indeed were ex-Nazis.
It will be fun to witness whether Islamist Egypt rises to the occasion in the best teachings of Islam,
or suffer the fate of Iran and Taliban type governments.
I am not ready to write off Egypt's Islamist government, are you?
They may just lead the way to a new form of Islamist government as an alternative to the bad ass form. That will require the West stop "ringing the fire bell" over Egypt's governments label or the Islamist will entrench more extreme.
Remember what happened when we turned a cold shoulder to Castro, or Ho Chi Minh. Lost opportunities and enemies created.

Judge by their deeds. Wait and see.
The alarmist attitude on the news is not helpful.

Moi, that alarmist attitude on the news has been going on for several years, this just adds to it, just wait until the republicans and Romney come out with a statement, you will see.

You see the problem is fundamentalists, its a male dominated religion where women take a back seat to everything that is happening, their job is to stay home and make babies, preferably male's. Women's rights will take a back seat again to the brotherhood of male's who are to afraid to even think that any woman can be equal in any way. This would be true even of Muslim's. It is because of this that we will have yet another war, the Arab spring will turn into a nuclear winter before this is done. The fundamentalist movement is live and well and on the march, it comes in all flavors, Christian, Muslim and Jew.

In the words of of Pope Urban II in 1097 repeated by George W Bush in 2002, 'If we don't fight them over there we will have to fight them over here.' Let the 8th Crusades began.

The Egyptian military will not let the Islamists get too far astray from a secular approach to governance. Otherwise, they will simply take over again in one manner or another. They have already severely limited the new president. I'm not overly concerned one way or the other about Egypt.

And I don't think that the Islamists want to go to far afield of a peaceful Egypt. I don't think that they want Egypt to be the next republic like Iran ... I also think that the man elected president there understands that he has to deal with the secular and very modern world.

This is the danger of democracy.

I think a lot of us saw this coming. It's ironic that secularists, progressives and women were the main demographics leading the revolution because they wanted more freedom...and then predictably people craving power and control over others seized power afterwards. The sad thing is that the ones who did all the work, made all the sacrifices, and carried the revolution through will be the first against the wall under an islamic theocracy.

    Cool Re: Islamist Egypt

Last news I heard was the Egyptian Supreme Court declared
the Military presumption of power illegal, paving the way for
unfettered power to the newly elected government.
But, that was a day or two ago. Anything more recent?
The nation seems to be working and not broken into riots because the vote was close.

    Thanks! Re: Islamist Egypt

Heard anything from our friend in Turkey? Are YOU lumping him in with YOUR unfettered orgy of fear mongering? What's the matter?

    BUSTED AGAIN, aren't you?

    Re: Islamist Egypt

I suspect that the Army in Egypt will do what it wants, as long as those in power don't go over board the Army will be OK with it, the minute they feel then need to step in they will and it wont matter what the Supreme Court of Egypt thinks or does.

Those that have the guns make the rules.

    Cool Re: Islamist Egypt

Egypt's military will function like Turkey's military.
Ready to step in should the democratically elected government fail to maintain support.
I guess we usually think of this scenario with Latin America and it is so foreign to the functions of the American military. Although it nearly happened in "7 Days in May".

I believe the last time Turkey's military stepped in and took over was the '80's. Not sure.
AS I understand Turkey's situation, they have no popular support for military intervention and will deal with Syria in the French style. Diplomatically.

Remember, The Turks are not Semitic. Unlike Egypt, Turkey has a long history of successfully managing a multi ethnic population. The treatment of Egypt's home grown Egyptian Christians (Coptic) will be a good indicator of the success of the new Islamist government. Christians, like Jews are Islam's people of the book. Will they be respected in the Islamist nation of Egypt? This is Egypt's Democracy canary bird.
