The Obama campaign apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward" — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.

GO blow it out your a$$ sideways is a phrase that has a long and reputable tradition in the world of DEAD AND RED politics.

"HAVE YOU NO SHAME" is the more operative and polite quote.

I've see a lot of things like this, over the last 20 years or so. I call it the "Dan Brown Effect". (my own invention)

Here is my thinking. Have you read The Davinci Code? It is a lot of hogwash, but it proposes that people in power have left clues to their real ideologies and purpose. They've left these clues in plain sight, but everyone is just too stupid to notice them. If only you are smart enough to recognize the signs, or are a part of the inner circle, will you see them. If you aren't looking for the clues, they'll go unnoticed.

The Davinci Code is the most popular and obvious example of it. But I see it with 9/11 truthers, and conspiracy nuts of all ilks.

Obama has used the word "Forward"... So? That is a pretty common word. In the novel I wrote, I used it no less than 35 times.

I think the word was chosen because so many people think the government of the USA is no longer moving in that direction. I don't think anyone cared or even bothered to see if anyone else had ever used that word.

I can see that some people are going to jump to the conclusion that some socialist and Marxist groups used the word, therefore, Obama must secretly be a Marxist and a socialist.

I'll bet there are a lot of other groups and organizations that have used the word "Forward", but those won't be as stringently researched.

In the world of the "Dan Brown Effect", 1 + 1 = purple.

In the real world coincidences happen. The Obama campaign chose the word "Forward". So have a lot of other groups. I'm not sure this even rises to the level of a coincidence. A coincidence implies a connection, no matter how small.

By that same level of coincidence, one could say, "I just learned that Obama breathes oxygen, and wrote a book. Do you know some other politicians who wrote books and breathed oxygen? Marx, Lennon, Hitler. Clearly Obama is another one of them. Can't you see? It is so obvious."

Please note the sarcasm I am using.

This is nothing. In the grand scheme of things, this has less meaning than claiming the guy was secretly born in Kenya. Lets let this one go, and continue to move forward. (Oh damn. I used the word again. I must be a Marxist.)

Forward is just boring. The best slogans use one syllable words, e.g., Hope and Change. Forward just sounds plodding and ordinary.

Since the general consensus, as shown by various polls over the last few years, is that the country is going backward, it at least sounds like a change in the right direction, though as a slogan I find it decidedly underwhelming, (like much of Obama's presidency [and I will concede that the Republicans have contributed to that lack of achievement])

This election is convincing me that the difference between bad and worse may be more significant than between good and bad.

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of socialist publications)."
"The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications," the online encyclopedia explains.
The slogan "Forward!" reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.
The Obama campaign released its new campaign slogan Monday in a 7-minute video. The title card has simply the word "Forward" with the "O" having the familiar Obama logo from 2008. It will be played at rallies this weekend that mark the Obama re-election campaign's official beginning.
There have been at least two radical-left publications named "Vorwaerts" (the German word for "Forward"). One was the daily newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Germany whose writers included Friedrich Engels and Leon Trotsky. It still publishes as the organ of Germany's SDP, though that party has changed considerably since World War II. Another was the 1844 biweekly reader of the Communist League. Karl Marx, Engels and Mikhail Bakunin are among the names associated with that publication.
East Germany named its Army soccer club ASK Vorwaerts Berlin (later FC Vorwaerts Frankfort).

Take a deep breath and step away from your keyboard. Take a walk, get a drink. It's only typical political hype, indulged in by both parties, not much more ridiculous than Obama' getting into a "my balls are bigger than your balls," tiff over whether Romney would have ordered the hit on Osama. The election season is just getting into full swing, and there's going to be a lot of BS between now and November. You have to pace yourself. If you are that outraged now, you might blow a blood vessel before things even get really going.

What I find interesting is the contrast between this, going back 50 - 75 years to find something to attack Obama on, and the Etch-a-Sketch comment, from Romney's campaign manager, implying that the body politic has the collective memory of a gnat. And they expect that same body politic to remember slogans from the 30's.
