    tooth decay

I have been having a increasing problem with cavities as i get older

i had 12 at this checkup 2 really bad ones no matter how much i brush...they just will not stop

after much research and discussion with my dentists and tests of the bacteria in my mouth i need to switch to a toothpaste with sodium bicarbonate and peroxide in it too kill those bad germs for good

I thought it was just old age...i wish i had learned this many cavities ago..i hope this helps others learn from my mistake.

Flouride i found out is worthless on older teeth as i just spread it over the backs of the bacteria and dont kill them

we will see how this works out

    Cool Re: tooth decay

Enamel is not static. Like bone it is always remolding itself.

An occasional fluoride atom substituted for a calcium is a good choice.
Harder enamel. I drink Sparkletts Fluoridated water because I avoid the heavy minerals (stones).
Water is the natural nutritional source of fluoride. Purified water. No fluoride.

    Remember,
The Tooth Decay germ is your first venereal disease.

Sorry for your problems. I do not think that is a common problem,
most of the older people I know mostly quit getting cavaties.
And I'm also surprized about the choice of toothpaste.
Do you get your teeth cleaned regularly?

This has never been substantiated in any research reported to date. Hell, my T runs about 500 and I still had 5 cavities filled in my recent experience with the university dental school. They did build a great bridge for me though.

Cavity? Never had one. True story. Not even in over half a century have I ever had one. But I did have to have a side front tooth pulled due to infection. It had been split for over ten years or so. Plus most of the upper portion of another tooth is gone after it too had cracked years ago. NEVER and I repeat never get into the habit of stripping wires and doing other stuff with your teeth.

Many people in Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, West Texas have few
cavities because of very high natural floride in the water. They also may
have small brown teeth. It's a trade off.

Maybe it's more a matter of eating and being raised on lots of oatmeal and beans for protein rather than much meat. (Once or twice a week growing up.) Probably that's more for the heart though. I alternate between hot coffee, chocolate, black tea, other tea and various herbal infusions throughout the day plus water, juice and semi-sweet chocolate baking chips. I'm not a vegetarian however when I do eat with vegetarians I'm always amazed at how little greens and how much starch they generally eat compared to me. Being potentially diabetic, I absolutely cannot eat like that although I'm no saint either. I do like potatoes and pasta and pastries. But if too much starch is bad for the metabolism being kind of even worse than sugar in a way, then it may not be good for the gums or tooth enamel either since it feeds the bacteria too. And then I heard that cheeses covereth a multitude of sins. I eat plenty of hot chilies, garlic and other spices which probably does more to kill that evil decay producing bacteria than anything else. A little bit of wine is good to swish around in your mouth from time to time, but also water daily. I cannot drink much of alcohol for another reason. Nuts. I have nothing else to say. But I never brushed regularly. I just use toothpicks and sticks mostly plus every so often I chew a little piñon sap for a day without eating.

    Re: tooth decay

I, too, am one of those guys who's teeth just don't get cavities.

Mom had her first one at age 37, and never lost her hair; dad had all his teeth removed due to excessive cavities at age 25 and was almost bald already.

Sure glad I took after Mom!

The dentists I've seen for extrations (my wisdom teeth grew in sideways, had to be removed) told me he's never seen enamel as thick as mine. However, it's just genetic; I was born with it, it's nothing I've done to cause this.

I did have one sort-of cavity; one wisdom tooth grew in so crooked it burrowed itself into the tooth in front of it, digging a hole into it. Had to have both removed.

However, I brush once a day (no more often than that; I believe the stories I've read that say over-brushing just leaves your teeth 'too exposed'), because while I may not worry much about tooth decay, they do get brown from the coffee I drink and cigarettes I smoke, and also I want to keep my gums healthy. Dentist told me it'd be unfortunate if I lost all my teeth due to rotten gums, so I brush properly, but just once a day (after supper).

    Cool Re: tooth decay

I am very, very lucky to be associated with a very
avant garde Dental Lab and access to their employee dentists who also makes company vids.

It doesn't make it hurt less although the gold & dentist is free. The numbing is wearing off as I type.

We all agree that gold is the best restoration because it is mailable and a tooth does have some elastic nature compared to a rock, like a zirconia restoration.
The tops of my molars are naturally blessed with deep crevices that were inviting to decay. I have faith we will someday have a vaccine against the tooth decay germ. Yes, one germ.
And not a very natural ones, except you must be exposed to it by someone else, like grandma kissing the baby. That is why I term it, the first venereal disease in one's life.
No cavities could just mean you haven't received the germ.

Remember the amount of money, that goes into dentistry? Materials and so on...

So one time vaccine vs continuous treatments? What will win?

PS. Yes, I know, that I am inviting the flame war here.
    Maybe I will know
    What's there in my soul
    And my road will flow
To place I've always had to go...
