    Game of Thrones DVD

For those like me that don't have HBO, Game of Thrones, Season I, is out on DVD. I've just started watching it, and I already love it. I've read the books, so I can't say what watching it would be like without that experience, but having read the books, the HBO series is fantastic.

Cool Re: Game of Thrones DVD

I am a Thronaholic but, I find I never plug in a DVD.
Just wait for it on "live" TV. Even in repeat form.
Please, fill in missing details from the books if you see them. Thanks.
Did you notice they killed off their two biggest stars season 1?
I wonder if future characters will have star power?

By book five, we don't have many of the main characters left. You find out who the real main characters are by who is left alive by then. You might be surprised at who the real main characters are.

I hope you enjoy it. I watched two of the shows and was bored. I wish you lots of fun.

    Re: Game of Thrones DVD

The amazing thing about Game of Thrones is how closely it follows the books. A few minor things are changed around, but nothing significant, or vital. I would say that so-far, the first series has followed the first book much closer than even Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings followed it's source material.

How closely the HBO series follows the books may prove to be difficult for people who don't or can't watch the series from the first episode. Much like the books, if you skip something, what comes after won't be as interesting or significant.

I fear what is going to happen in later episodes if the show continues to follow this trend. If it stays true to its source material, then the third season will be especially tricky. People who haven't read the books may leave in disgust. What you can accept in a book, you may not be able to accept in a TV series.

I find it extremely interesting and exciting to follow this series. I also am hoping the series does make a significant break from the books is some regard. If it doesn't, then I'm not sure how it will deal with some of the upcoming hurdles the story demands. Those hurdles can make for some great reading, but I'm not sure of how enjoyable a television series they'll make.

Criticisms aside, I thing Game of Thrones is one of the best series I have ever watched. I am thoroughly invested.

I just finished watching all ten episodes, and I thought they did an excellent job with it. While no doubt some details were left out, I can't think of anything major they missed. Not boring at all in my opinion. Well done.

After five long books, though, the author isn't finished with this saga. I sometimes wonder whether he - or possibly I - will live to see the end of it. I started reading after the fifth book came out jumping to the mistaken conclusion that the fifth book was the last. It's not, and I wonder how many more books it will take to complete it, or if he ever intends to complete it.

Back in December 2000, Warren W. James published an audio interview with George R. R. Martin. At that time George R. R. Martin had only finished the first three books in the "Song of Ice and Fire" epic fantasy series. In the interview, they talk about the difficulty of keeping a story from growing excessively long.

George RR Martin had planned to make the series go seven books. However, book four became so long, that it had to be split into books four and five. There are most likely, two or three more books to come. If he has to split books again... possibly more.

The saddest part is we had to wait 5 years between books three and four, and we had to wait six years between books four and five. At this rate, we should get book six by 2019, book seven by 2027, and if there is a book eight, we could see it by 2036. As George was born in 1948, that would make him only 87 years old when the series is finally complete.

    Crap. I just depressed myself.

That's why I said that either Martin or I might not be alive to see the end of the series. I'm nine years older than Martin, but he's fat, and I'm not.

Even if Martin dies without finishing the series, his estate might have another writer complete it. Kevin J. Anderson might be a good choice. He is a VERY prolific writer and he completed A.E. Van Vogt's novel Slan Hunter.

Cool Re: Game of Thrones DVD

I am a fan of Robert E. Howard. He wrote lots of historical fiction and not just Fantasy.

While watching the repeat of the final episode of Thrones, season 1, the Khalessi has just survived the funeral pyre and stands naked, somber, beautiful, with 3 baby dragons.

    Wow. So Howardesque!
Did anyone write such "Fantasy Babe" scenes before Robert E. Howard. Surly lots copy him to this day.

    Season 2 starts Sunday.
