Story Reposts of Existing Stories

Over the last two days, I have had three stories submitted with the following problem:

THEY ARE NEARLY VERBATIM REPOSTS OF EXISTING STORIES that are already on the Archive and they are not by the SAME author.

We have had the discussion before about reposting and / or translating stories by other Authors. The policy is to try and get permission, but this doesn't always work. In the case of some old stories, there is no email address and the name doesn't come up as a current user.

Authors come and go here, but this isn't going to be tolerated.

One story in question is Speedo Brothers, of which "Wayne" submitted 2 versions. That's fine. We should have removed the old one but obviously forgot. However, yesterday an almost carbon copy of it came in under another name, a more recent user. If this were indeed Wayne, he should have told me. If it was a continuation or a tweak, someone should have spoken up and asked.

It's been trashed, as will be all further attempts to copy and repost Archive stories.

It just so happens that I recognized this one. It is at http://www.eunuch.org/Alpha/S/newea_17357Speedo_B.htm and is by Wayne, dens_7@hotmail.com which is posted in the story. It's a nice, short read.

The other is also a verbatim repost of something already used twice and frankly I'm tired of seeing the same text. If your anonymous, fine; at least send me an email about your intentions to continue a short story.

Ceecie is also posting an alternate version of Boarding School, which can be found in the "B" author sub-index. There is no email for the original author back in 2000, and if he/she objects, we'll work it out if I ever hear to the contrary. Ceecie asked what to do, which is just fine. I rather like this story too, as well as her new additions.

So if you're thinking about doing this, think again. I certainly dont' claim to have every story here committed to memory, but if I catch you copying, I'll ban you and your whole ISP at that.

The New repost is from the original write. If you have ever seen my introduction I used to write under those names and have been around the board since it inception. I found errors in the stories and fixed them so that they made better sence. You will see on technical problems I gave this information earlier today

You should have warned me ahead of time and I'd have made accomodations instead of trashing what I thought was theft of a story/copying. While is wasn't, in this case, that's sure as hell what it looked like.

This explanation is more than satisfactory, even if the tone about not writing another one isn't. If you want the old one replaced, we'll work it out.

We were attempting to PROTECT your original work, not disrespect you.

We have on many occasions replaced a story for an authour who wanted to submit an updated or edited version of a story. Typically they contact us ahead of time to let us know.

If you will send me a private message with the titles of the stories you have written and want to see statistics for, I will make that change for you. From now on with your new stories if you will use the registered submission form they will automatically show up on your stats page.

If we replace the story you tried to resubmit, it will reset the hit counter. And there are only stats for stories submitted after 02-12-2001 .

I hope this answers most of your questions and concerns.

I posted a two part story last night "The Trip (part1)" & "The Trip (part 2)". I can find only the second part which doesn't make a lot of sense without the first part.

Add to that your rant about reposting, I'm wondering if you think my totally original story is some kind of rip off or did something just get messed up in the transfer of data? There is one other story with the same title but it isn't at all similar.

Do I dare try again to put in the first part or am I now going to get accused of reposting existing stories?

Each & every story (only 4) in your archive by "Chameleon" are mine and are original works.

It always amazes me when people's first assumption is that something BAD is going on.

I would assume there was some kind of problem and that we were unable to contact you because you're not a member of the message boards here and there's no email associated with the stories.

By all means please re-submit part 1.

You know, it's replies like this that really piss me off. As Bboy stated, it's amazing how many people just flip out and go off as soon as they don't see things working out as THEY think they should.

When I saw The Trip 2 in the tank, I didn't recall ever seeing a Part 1, but then again there were a LOT of stories and email for me to go through, so once I had read it, I released it. One also has to realize that computers CAN screw up now and then - data gets lost, things vanish, even though you were told otherwise by the machine.

Repost Part 1 at your convenience.

That's what I do pal, I rant. I run the place, OK? Like or leave it. People trying to pull a fast one on me and then popping off with a smart-ass remark when I'm trying to protect the integrity of the Authors and this site annoys me to no end.

We (speaking for Paolo here too) certainly apologize if we offended you. We didn't mean to. We do need to know whether to delete The Trip (2) or if you plan on (re)posting the first part.

I am just trying to point out the difference between saying something like

Hey guys ... I submitted two stories, The Trip (1) and The Trip (2) but only The Trip (2) shows up in the index. Can you help me figure out what happened to the other part?

as opposed to

I just want to point out again that sometimes people DO copy stories, and that the intention of this thread and Paolo's actions are/were to protect the original author, not accuse anyone of anything.

It certainly does NOT apply to authors reposting their OWN stories, although a note ahead of time to tell us what needs to be done (ie: please replace this story with the updated version) is nice.

Communication is the key, especially if there's something complicating the issue, like having changed names as was the case with Wayne. With no other information why would we assume that a person reposting a story under a completely different name was actually the same person?

When people change names, or refuse to provide any way of contacting them (like registering for the bulletin board) it makes it really difficult to resolve problems quickly and easily. As you can surely tell from having this whole situation aired in public.
