    smokes California

    There are no convenient California relevant threads without going to the graveyard.
    So, introducing;
    The 2012, "California" Thread serving everything and anything, California.

    Today's California.
    For all those Initiative critics. Guess who could not acquire enough signatures to qualify for the ballot?
    <game show thinking music>
    <chime!>
    California State Dream Act opponents failed to qualify their initiative to repeal the California Dream Act. A law that gives any kid who graduates from a California High School, State resident access to State funded higher education regardless of Federal immigration status.

    Usually 1 Million dollars buys you enough signatures from established signature gathering companies to get on the ballot. Y'think Californians refused to sign this one?

    Because the last time Californians signed petitions, they 1) recalled a perfectly competent governor with a rational plan to tackle the deficit for a groping idiot whose principal objective was to make sure he wouldn't have to pay full registration fees on his eight Hummers and 2) they enacted Proposition Hate. Twice burned, once shy.

    The deficit that Gray Davis had to tackle was mainly caused by the electricity deregulation scheme pushed through by Pete Wilson, his republican predecessor.

    I think that maybe the voters are finally getting wise to the fact that while the republicans say that their plans will be good for everyone, they actually are only good for the rich, if they are good for anyone.

    I wouldn't say the last time. The initiative process in California is too easy, we have voter/group sponsored initiatives on the ballot out here all the time. It's ridiculous and one of the reasons California is ungovernable. If the governor or the legislature doesn't want to deal with a hot-button issue, they punt it to the voters and let mob-rule decide. Or put another way, they abdicate their authority to the voters to decide contentious issues.

    You can't run a state by making the voters decide every issue. At that point you may as well just shut down the legislature, fire the governor and put up kiosks at the mall that people can come and freely vote on the issue of the day, which California is seemingly on one short step from doing.

    I don't want to see the initiative process banned, but I would like to see it become much harder to put these things on the ballot so that the elected representative and the governor had to actually do their jobs.

    I thought so too. 1 million dollars would get some company to get you on the ballot.
    Yet the "Repeal the California Dream Act" petition recently failed.
    Something happening. Maybe people are less willing to sign today. Or actually judged this petition wrong.

    The correction that may be sufficient is any spending must be accounted against revenues.
    And of course placing Bonds back at a 2/3rds vote. Crazily it was reduced to a simple majority by a simple majority. Hardly seems fair or just.

    BTW the part of California about 4-8 hours north of San Francisco is incredibly beautiful, under populated and lacking a University of California campus. Its' City Colleges and State College & University are among the best in the system.

    Cool Re: California

    Not to forget California as
    The New, Improved, Open Primary
    with proportional delegate representation
    may name the candidate before the convention.
    Or have something to say about it. Usually Californians don't.
    The game is usually over by the time the primary gets here.
    Well read up on the circus that could place the next President of the United Corporations of America

    Primary debuts changes that could give voters fits
    New top-two method gives voters choices.
    California's June 5 primary will throw voters the biggest election curve they've seen since the 2003 gubernatorial recall saw 135 candidates clog the ballot.

    In the upcoming election -- and from now on -- ballots for all state and federal offices except president will include every candidate, regardless of political party.

    That means all voters will choose from Republican, Democrat and third-party candidates seeking a seat in Congress, U.S. Senate, state Senate and state Assembly. In 2014, state offices such as governor, insurance commissioner and treasurer will be part of the mix.

    California Senate passes "anti-Arizona" immigration bill
    SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - The California Senate passed a bill on Thursday that seeks to shield illegal immigrants from status checks by local police and challenges Republican-backed immigration crackdowns in Arizona and other U.S. states.
    The Democrat-led state Senate voted 21 to 13 to approve the California Trust Act, dubbed by supporters as the "anti-Arizona" bill. It blocks local police from referring a detainee to immigration officials for deportation unless that person has been convicted of a violent or serious felony. . . . .
    . . . . It has already passed the Democrat-controlled state Assembly in a 47-26 vote and will go back to the Assembly for a concurrence vote following the summer recess before heading to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown.
