I think clit removal is more analogous to a penectomy than a castration. The bits that make the babies are still there. Hormone production is not affected. She'll still be having her period once a month, if she's not on the pill.

Calling clitoris removal "female castration" is a misnomer. Of course, not having female sex organs myself, I can't speak to the emotional loss a woman might feel from the loss of sensitive material in that area.

I assume you're saying that because the vaginal walls still have spongy material that is equivalent of penis shaft?

However, a full clit also has a "shaft" albeit proportionately small, so I think that it still represents a significant portion of the nerves from the entire penis.

Also, I don't know about other guy's penises, but the sensitivity of my glans and the "last inch" of the penis" is much greater than the portion of the shaft closer to the base. I would say that losing the glans is more than half of what a penis is all about from a sensation point of view.

Lastly, many women already have trouble orgasming at all, and most if not all require clitoral stimulation. Even those that claim to orgasm just from vaginal stimulation usually get some secondary clit stimulation (i.e. pulling on the skin, or vibration through the flesh). Removing a woman's clit is probably almost guaranteed to eliminate her ability to orgasm via intercourse.

So overall I think it is closer to penectomy from the functional effect.

I get what you're saying, just pointing out that there is a "shaft" on the clit as well, and losing that must be more than just the glans from a sensation point of view. While intercourse is still possible as you mentioned, I suspect that the woman will have lost a greater portion of their sensations which to me is the more important part of the "function". For me, the inch of the shaft of my penis below the glans is also really sensitive and sufficient to allow stimulation to orgasm -- often I masturbate just with that area without glans stimulation.

Anyway, the main reason I argue it is more like penectomy is in order not to trivialize it -- clitorectomy is pretty much dooming a woman to not experience natural orgasms which is taking away "a lot". The exact proportions of what is lost relative to a penis is of course arguable.

I guess one thing is that a penis is so sexual, that even a small nubbin left is probably orgasmic, but women majority have trouble with getting enough stimulation so it is particularly ruinous for them to lose even a small portion of the sensation. In other words, a stub of a penis left is still probably a more sensual of an organ than a clitless vagina.

Not at all. One 1st has to understand how different a mans and woman's orgasm is. Also, there is far more clit under the "skin" even if all the shaft is removed, then there is penile shaft inside the body. to cut off the clit at the shaft base can easily increase a woman's orgasmic ability. You can't look at any study like that and call it scientific -- the only way to understand what was "lost" by infibulation is to have before and after measured. It is like how a guy who was circumcised at birth claims they didn't lose anything, yet I was circumcised as an adult and can say that you definitely lose a lot of sensation (a good thing for me because I was oversensitive and had problem with being premature).

And you also have to be careful studying people who have undergone clit removal as an adult because the data can also be biased in either direction (people losing it due to cancer might over-report loss, whereas a person getting it removed for fetish might under-report it).

While there is argument on how necessary the clit is for orgasm, there is no argument that the clit is the most sensitive part of the majority of women's genitalia and if something that is a big bundle of nerves is removed it HAS to result in losing something.

This actually touches on an interesting philosophical concept -- when you lose a part of the body, do you lose a part of yourself. On the one hand we know that humans can certainly continue to live good lives and feel pretty good after losing limbs and such. On the other hand, logically a portion of possible sensation, potential experience, and capability is definitely lost. A brain in a jar somehow must be less.

It is also true that the mind is good at doing some - re-routing of functions, so perhaps the clitoral sensations that are missing eventually get proxied to some degree.

But I respectfully maintain my position that losing a clit is significant, that women who lost them involuntarily as a child have no basis for saying they aren't missing something, and that for many women it would make orgasm harder.

Also, from personal experience I've had sex with a LOT of women (admittedly many of them protitutes), but invariably they like and even need clit stimulation as part of enjoying sex to the fullest and to guarantee an orgasm.
