There is indeed a third gender, although I would not use "third gender" as the name for it. Informally it is a term of convenience to really mean, the rest of the gender spectrum that does not fit within the majority duality of men and women. Some people feel like both, some feel like neither, to make distinctions I think there would have to be a fourth, fifth, sixth gender, so on and so forth.
Generally, my guess is that for the gender category of "others", it would not be easy to apply the "bi, gay, straight" categorisation to it. A large deciding factor would probably be how the subject in question views the person he/she is attracted to, and I am guessing that sometimes, "bi" can be a convenient word to mean you don't really care if one is attracted to a person whose gender is men, women or others.
Maybe for the sake of simplicity in this survey, as Dave's requested, we could consider pansexuality to be within the realms of bisexuality, even though there is a distinction between the two.
In the end, the only way it matters is if people get hurt due to the ignorance of others or not, otherwise, why should it matter what one likes or if one has a lack of distinction in what they are or prefer?
