More people have vitamin D deficiencies due to wearing sunscreen. Yes you need to apply sunscreen for extended periods of time in the sun. On the other hand you need about 10-15 minutes in the sun unprotected for vitamin D. From what I have read the sun after 3pm is less dangerous to the skin.

Out of curiosity, what are the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency?

Very soft bones, Rickets, a problem in mostly malnourished peoples. Now with our reduction of exposure to the sun from sunscreen products many have low levels of D. Bones that fracture easily in teenagers playing sports are often linked to low amounts of Vitamin D. People of color are more at risk to Vitamin D deficiency because the color of their skin does not absorb the suns rays as easily.

Everyone take your calcium with vitamin d. Take a multiple vitamin with d. Some sun and then apply the sunscreen.

    Re: vitamin d test

Never heard of having a vitamin d test done except as part of a bone work up, osteoporosis, and such.
It concerns me as we are not treating sunlight as poison. And tanning booths are as carcinogenic.
Personally, I do it as the Vikings did. Not known for Sunbathing they were known for drinking their dose of "cod liver oil". About once a week, I take a mouthful of cod liver oil after a fatty meal. Hope that works.
Ask me in a few decades.
Being "bird boned", I also drink fluoridated water because bone and teeth are always, remolding themselves, and every now and then, a fluoride atom amongst the calcium atoms makes a stronger, harder tooth and bone.
I will not debate the virtues of fluoride. It is!
    But, hey, C'est Moi

Try putting "antagonist" or "inhibitor" into the search terms, there's a possibility that something is lowering levels despite the supplement and sunshine.
