Is "black hole" a racially insensitive term?
Apparently to some. From the City Hall Blog at the Dallas Morning News:

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term.


Judge Jones should be very glad that the central collections office has not become a white hole, a theoretical object that ejects matter from beyond its event horizon, rather than sucking it in. It wouldn't be fun for Dallas to find itself so near a quasar.

Anyone wanting to know a good deal about black holes should read the excellent new book, The Black Hole War, by Leonard Susskind, which has just been released. I'm in the middle of it, and the book's a fascinating tour of modern physics written for the layman. It's just been marvelous so far.

It seems that you cannot use a sientific term because it contains the word black. For those who do not know this the colour black contains all colours and white contains no colour. That is basic science I learned in grammar school.

1. It seems that there are some ignorant people holding high office. Should a man who doesn't know what a black hole is be a judge?

2 You don't need a psychology qualification to see that the not-very-learned Judge has a chip on his shoulder. So has the commissioner who would also appear to be not-very-learned.

These men have a privileged successful life but are over reacting to a perceived insult. By doing so they are reinforcing the bigotry that they resent so much.

Much better to follow the English example. Call an Englishman a limey or a pomme and it won't bother him at all. It might possibly lower his opinion of the person who used the term though. Secretly, deep down in his heart, every Englishman believes Cecil Rhodes has it right with his dictum "To have been born an English man is to have drawn first prize in the lottery of life."

That's why the English are apt to get up your nose the way they do.

Either way, you can't win.

So as you looked white appears as all colors when separated through a prisim but black is the absence of all electromagnetic radiation including light...

...but just play a piano without using the black keys and see how 'common' it sounds...

...this bores me to death and just proves once again that politics is too important to leave to politicians...

Actually it depends on the type of light your talking about.

With Additive color white is a mixture of all colors. If you had three separate lights red, green and a blue (say your monitor) all shinning equally at the same spot you would have white!

However, with Subtractive color you get a mixture of black. If you had three jars of paint (Cyan, Yellow and Magenta) and mixed them equally you get black. But when printing those three colors you really do not get a good deep black...it actually is more of muddy dark brown which is why you have CYMK printing.

But in everyday life you want a white roof on your car instead of a black one. Why? Black pulls in all the color available, so the roof gets hotter. However, with a white roof runs cooler because it does not pull in any color. Which is why people who live in the desert have typically have cars with white roofs. Though if you doubt this go sit on some asphalt for awhile.
