who is telling us the trouth in the news

I used to get my news from Fox news but now I get some of my best news from HLN and CNN.Glenn Beck of HLN and Lue Bobs CNN tell it the best for me.I know this question was brought up some time back but I know I have changed who I watch and was wondering how others felt.

I realize that I pay little attention to news these days. I don’t know why. I read The New York Times online and little else. For many years, I read the NYT and WSJ every business day. I also read several journals every months.

The editorial board of The Wall Street Journal rarely impressed me, but the paper often had the best reporting of any newspaper on a broad range of subjects. PBS has had to contend with assaults from the know-nothings of the Republican right wing but the network has recently presented excellent work from Bill Moyers, the producers of Frontline, and other producers.

The New York Times has had problems, but it is the newspaper of record. I think that it did poor work on the pre-invasion of Iraq.

Some regional and local papers do first-rate work on various topics. They sometimes deal with issues that the national papers completely miss.

I read books on recent history. Some reporters can do excellent work in long books that they cannot do in short newspapers pieces. Thomas Rickss is such a reporter.

I have found it is best for me to watch more then one news station and then put everything togeather. That way I have a better idea of what is going on because one station cant give us all we need.

I get my news from MSNBC. Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough who is a conservative with 2 other hosts who are more in the center or left of center. I also watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann who is bashing Bush and republicans nightly. Countdown is also hilarious with Oddball after the 2nd story and the last 10-15 minutes are fantastic with entertainment news and "Worst persons in the World" I also watch Dan Abrams who covers legal issues primarily but also politics and entertainment news.

So it goes right to left on there and between them all you get a good picture and perspective from both sides in my view.

This may seem a little off topic but I highly recommend the 1950 movie Rashômon by Akira Kurosawa.

Like you Sag, I watch less fox a more of a mix and try to figure out what's going on for myself. Fox seems to be staying too far toward entertainment bullshit than real news. It is refreasing to see that the press is reluctantly admitting that the "SURGE" seems to be working. The worst excuse for journalism though is Katie Couric's little afternoon program. What a joke!

Fox News is obviously heavily slanted toward supporting Bush and the Republicans. Most of the main stream media seems slanted to the left. I find that the News Hour on PBS is the only news that really tries to give background on the subject and a balanced report.

None of the news media tells the truth, and all of them tell the truth.
They tell the truth they want to spin.!

For me truth is personal and different for every person. However, a fact is undeniable. For example...

Bush Jr is a complete idiot! That is my truth. However, the fact is he is the President of the United States.

Everyone sees what they want to see, and translates it into what they want to think.

    Boy!

    You got that right.

It comes from not having standards or being too tolerant of things of which we should NOT be tolerant.

For example, should we allow people to be able to tell us what or how to think? Should we tolerate that?

Should we just slough it off and call it "SPIN" instead of "BOLDFACE LIES" ?

It is about time that we learned to think for ourselves and stopped accepting others versions of reality as our own.

You and me both, I also like the BBC.

To the extent that they cover U.S. news, I always thought The National on CBC was more unbiased than any of the U.S. networks--haven't watched it for a while, and perhaps Peter Mansbridge isn't the anchor any more.

I agree that BBC is a quality news source. You hear a lot of stuff there that never gets on the U.S. media, or at least not on any prominent tv shows or in most newspapers.

Reuters seems to be a reasonably unbiased online source, although they tend to have business-oriented stories instead of the usual political news. Drudge Report seems to have a bias of some sort, but I access it anyway because the stories sort of jump out at you.

I agree with the idea that the weather news seems the most unbiased. Jim Cantore on the Weather Channel always appears to be believable, although he doesn't seem to anchor that much any more. Abrams and Bettes is a good show, and I guess it's their attempt to be sexy.

Re: who is telling us the trouth in the news

Here is how I rate them:

Fox News is Faux News. Not fair and Balanced as they claim to be.

CNN & HLN are pretty light on actual content. There's plenty of information about Paris Hilton if I ever want to know about it. Over all they were fairly Hawkish in the run up to the invasion of Iraq. Glenn Beck was especially vociferous in that regard. He seems to bee quite the alarmist and I don't find that too useful at all. Lou Dobs is pretty good but he's a bit of a one trick pony with the "War on the Middle Class" This is nothing new of course because there has always been a class war in this nation and throughout much of western history.

PBS is OK, but they seem to have toned things down a bit in favor of self preservation. Still they do give a lot of background and I still listen to them.

BBC is good but I prefer the broadcast slated for GB as opposed to the version targeted for the American audience. It's interesting to compare the different versions and see what get included and redacted from each.

The bottom line is there is a lot of "Truthiness" to sift through before you get to the truth, and in the US there are only about six major news corporations so as we boldly march on into a brave new world it................ "CENSORED"

Re: who is telling us the trouth in the news

Two people can both see the same event happen, and both can come up with vastly different stories about what happened.

I do like the BBC news site, but they use tracking cookies. Of course I delete them but it is a pain in the but.

Fox news is a total joke...although i did happen to see a interview between Glen and Penn (of Penn and Teller) that was very interesting.

CNN is one of the better news sources.

I try to use a variety of news sources from the Drudge report to local news sources.
