Cainanite

I just finished my novel.

Well, it is done.

I might have a few commas in the wrong places, and I might have a few of the tense articles wrong, like saying 'here' when I should say 'there', or 'now' when I really mean 'then'. There are a couple of places my words get a little too flowery, and I need to simplify. I even have one chapter where I completely break with my narrative structure, to tell the tale from a different point of view.

Flaws and all though, it is done. It's taken me just under a year to complete, and I'm actually proud of what I accomplished.

I've gone back and forth over the story, adding and subtracting paragraphs, re-arranging thoughts, and even dumping things I thought were important, but really just slowed things down, or didn't matter. Sometimes removing those bits of the story were like performing self surgery. It was painful and messy, but I had to do it.

When I first started this thing, I didn't know where the story was headed. (I thought I did.) Its true destination only came to me about half way through writing it. Even as I wrote the last words, I was surprised. There were a few little things I had done with the story, and a few choices I had made along the way, that suddenly resolved. I didn't realize they needed resolving, until I wrote the resolution. My subconscious likes to mess with me.

I'm probably the only person who will find this story interesting. It is really not very different from a lot of offerings already on the Fiction Archive, some of which are written a lot better than this. I had a message I needed to share, though. Something I needed to say that could only be shared here on the EA. I can only hope that what I have is just interesting enough to entice a reader to read through until the end.

Even though it will be a long time before I can submit this to the Archive (I have to wait like everyone else.) I wanted to see if I could entice a reader or two to offer their time, and give it a read for me.

I also wanted to try and write a teaser for it, like you'd read on the cover jacket, were it ever to be published as a real book.

So here goes nothing;

Jason Sidney is forced to look back on the story of his life, and find the one moment that truly defines him.

Is it his unconventional upbringing in an affluent home? Is he defined by the eccentric friends his parents associate with. Is it his struggle to fit in?

Jason examines a time in his life when he was ten (almost eleven) years old. A time when he began his quest to gain entrance to the forbidden and mysterious room in the basement. His quest will lead him to unusual and exotic people, truths about himself too difficult to face, and ultimately to the love of his life.

It is a quest of understanding, loss and finally redemption.

Join Jason Sidney on his journey of self discovery. Share his pain, his torment, and his rebirth. Follow along to the unbelievable conclusion, and perhaps you too can learn, How to Breathe

If anyone out there is interested in giving it a read, send me a PM and I'll send you a copy. Let me know your email address, and what format you want it in. If you have a book reader that you can manually add books onto, I can even do that. (I just discovered how to convert files to e-readers )

I may also send a few PMs to some folks I respect to not spare my feelings.

Thanks to everyone on the EA. I couldn't have finished this without you.

Okay, that teaser SUCKED. The more I read that teaser the more I hate it. It sounds like a F*****g Disney move. This is not that story.

    I need to try again.

This is the story of one person looking back over the course of his life. He is looking for meaning, and the moments that define him. His journey will take him from the innocence of childhood exploration, through pain, loss, torment, and ultimately to his rebirth.

He must confront what it means to be sexual, to face the darkness within himself, and to embrace the forbidden. It is his search for love, and the search for meaning in a life out of control.

When things look darkest and your existence is torn to pieces, can you ever find a way to go on?
Well, That is a little better. Maybe one of my readers will think of a better way to describe it.

It is official. I am too close to this story to look at it objectively anymore. I've been living with it for too long. I need to walk away from it for a while.

I need to go back to editing the Fiction Archive, so I can enjoy some actual GOOD fiction for a change.

The title seems like a perfect fit to me.

Although I am very self-centred, I am looking forward to sparing some time for checking this out. I am sure that it will be a worthwhile read.

Congratulations, Cainanite. I have often thought of writing but never thought I could come up with enough interesting thoughts that anybody would enjoy reading.

    Are you kidding me?

"One Day in the Life of a Wolf" is like a gripping novel unto itself. You might not realize it, but you could derive one heck of a novel just from your posts. I'd read it.

Anyhow, thanks. I'm hip deep in editing it now. Those kind enough to read it for me, are offering some invaluable hints and suggestions. Maybe one day, it will see the light, and I'll be happy enough with it to post it where anyone who's interested can read the thing.

    UPDATE:

I'm doing a lot of editing on my novel thanks to some very valuable suggestions I am getting. I'm also doing some reading to try and get my mind off of it.

Please excuse me for a moment, I am going to swear... [ CONTENT DELETED FOR SENSITIVE READERS AND UNDUE VULGARITY ]

... Okay, done with that for now.

I think I missed writing a chapter. As I've taken a little time to consider things outside of my own head, I realized I missed a step on my main character's journey. This is the reverse of the process I'm used to. Usually I overwrite on my first pass, then have to go back and pare things down. No-one needs to know where everyone is at all points in the story. It's not a laundry list of things that happen. If I had left in everything I wrote, this book would be twice as long.

Editing from the suggestions I've been getting, and doing some other reading, has let me have a little more objectivity. It made me realize I'd missed something. Now I have to go back and see if I can shoehorn it in.

I'm going to try anyway. I should probably go with my first instinct and leave it out, but now that I realize it is missing, I can't let it go.

[ MORE CONTENT DELETED... REALLY? THIS MUCH SWEARING??] ...

    ... sideways with a shovel!

Hoo boy. Where was I? Oh yeah.

I'm off to write another chapter. I seriously thought I was done.

Maybe I am and I am just wasting my time. Maybe the novel actually works better without it. I need to see.

What was the quote? 'Art is never finished, merely abandoned'?

Whatever it is, I'm not ready to abandon it yet.

I know, right? How could I forget the most important character?

    I should be flogged.

Well, the damnable thing is complete again.

I finished writing a new chapter. It is fairly short, but it was needed. It was a detail that helps the reader understand what the main character is going through. Without it, the story kind of jumps too quickly, and the reader is left wondering... how the hell did that happen?

I also expanded the conclusion of another chapter. It was time for my character to have some happiness return to his life, and I was glossing over that point.

Thanks to everyone who has been offering advice.

Thank-you so much. I'm still having a tough time accepting praise. Every time someone says something nice about it, I tear up.

I doubt it is "one of the best things" you've read, but that it isn't completely worthless to someone other than me... well that means more than you can know.

I think that there is a lot of "us" in "our hero" of the story. Anyone here can probably relate to him, and find a great deal of oneself in him. I know I did. It is so rare, even in lame-stream fiction, to find a character that one identifies with, one that we feel we have come to know, and even miss him when the story is over. This novel does that.

    Thanks again.

I'm really looking forward to the day I can put this online for people to read. I may have to look at some alternatives, until our story section can again take submissions.

I might be starting a sequel to it. I'm trying to talk myself out of it, but sometimes the characters keep speaking to me.

I guess this isn't out of my system just yet.
