[NULLIFICATION] [MINOR] Cannibalism

Lawyers for Cannibal Albert Fentress are trying to convince the
State to set this Psycho free. Nineteen years ago high school
history teacher Albert Fentress lured a student football player
to his home. He chained the seventeen year old boy to a post in
his basement where he sexually molested the boy, cut off his
genitals, which he cooked, and then three hours after Fentress had
eaten the innocent boy's genitals, he shot him in the head.

Poughkeepsie killer who castrated an 18-year-old student
and ate his genitals is again seeking his freedom - this time
before a Long Island jury.

In a move opposed by the state attorney general, lawyers for
Albert Fentress will make a case for his release in a trial scheduled
to start next week in Suffolk County.

Fentress, a former history teacher, was found not guilty by reason
of insanity after confessing to the 1979 slaying of football player
Paul Masters.

Cops say the man who became known as the Poughkeepsie
Cannibal chained Masters to a pole, sexually abused him, shot him
in the head, cut off his genitals and then ate them.

State law requires that his case be reviewed by a judge every two
years. But this is the first time a jury will be asked to decide
whether Fentress should remain locked away at the Pilgrim State
Psychiatric Center in Brentwood, L.I.

"We're going to be in court, aggressively arguing against his
release," said Darren Dopp, a spokesman for Attorney General
Eliot Spitzer.

The state Office of Mental Health also is working to block
Fentress' release, a spokesman said yesterday.

Lawyers with the state-funded Mental Hygiene Legal Services,
who are representing Fentress, could not be reached last night for
comment.

But in a hearing two years ago, Fentress, who had no prior
criminal record, was described as a model prisoner. A computer
whiz, he published an in-house newsletter at the psychiatric center
where he was first placed. About a half-dozen center employees
- including his psychiatrist - are prepared to testify on Fentress'
behalf, Dopp said.

But Fentress' mild-mannered personality should not be mistaken
for a cure, Dopp said.

Another worry, he said, is the inability to track Fentress'
whereabouts. Because he was found not guilty, Fentress' name
would not be included on the sex-offender registry maintained by
the state.

"It's possible," Dopp said, "that he would go into a community and
no one would know about his background."

 RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (Reuters, 04-14) - A former history and
social studies teacher appeared in court to argue for his release
from state psychiatric care. In 1979 Albert Fentress was accused
of castrating a 17-year-old boy, cooking and eating his genitals
and finally shooting him a few hours later. According to his attorney,
Fentress ran a computer center at the psychiatric hospital and is
 "a model patient."

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (April 14, 1997 7:37 p.m. EDT) - An accused
cannibal appeared in court on Monday to argue for his release from state
psychiatric care, where he has been since allegedly castrating and eating
the genitals of a teenage boy.

Authorities are seeking to keep Albert Fentress, 55, of Poughkeepsie,
New York, under state care, said a spokesman for the Office of Mental
Health.

His attorneys want Fentress released under certain conditions, including
outpatient treatment and rehabilitation. By law, Fentress has the right to
seek release every two years.

The former history and social studies teacher was accused in the 1979
killing of 17-year-old Paul Masters but found unfit to stand trial the
following year by reason of insanity.

According to prosecutors, Fentress lured the teen to the basement of his
home, where he tied him up, castrated him, cooked and ate his genitals, fell
asleep and woke up to fatally shoot his victim out of his misery.

Dr. Abraham Halpern testified for state authorities on Monday that he did
not believe Fentress should be released. He said Fentress suffered from an
obsessive compulsive personality disorder and a narcissistic disorder and
had not cooperated with psychiatric treatment.

Fentress' attorney Kim Darrow said he was "a model patient" who ran a
computer center at the psychiatric hospital.

Suffolk County Judge John Vaughn will decide if Fentress is eligible for
release from Kings Park Psychiatric Center in New York, where he has
been refused release several times. The hearing is expected to last several
days.

Fentress, who arrived in the courtroom wearing dark sunglasses, showed
no emotion during the day's testimony.

After the court proceedings, he said to reporters: "I want to speak very
much, but I'm told I can't."

Fentress' attorneys have said he was driven to insanity after teenagers stole
his stamp collection and threw eggs at his house. Fentress has testified that
fear of his father caused him to murder Masters and once said his father
had threatened to castrate him.

Assistant State Attorney General John Stolfi said Fentress has never
shown any remorse for the alleged castration, cannibalism and killing.

"He destroyed a life. He destroyed a family," said Stolfi.

Killer Teacher Denied Release

Hudson Valley, 9/24/98

No freedom yet in a notorious case. A former high school teacher who
killed and ate a student 19 years ago will not be freed from a state
psychiatric hospital, a Suffolk County judge has ruled. Albert
Fentress, 56, who castrated and killed 17-year-old Paul Masters of
Poughkeepsie in 1979, was found not guilty by reason of insanity in
1980. Judge John Vaughn rejected Fentress's plea Wednesday for a
conditional release from Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Brentwood,
on Long Island. Vaughn's decision came after a hearing with
testimony from doctors who contended that Fentress continues to pose
a threat to public safety, according to a release from Attorney
General Dennis Vacco. The retention order expires in May 2000.
The case shocked the community at the time.
