This little study seeks the origin of the glory hole and how it was 
and is used, and presents a fantasy about how it might be used if 
some of us were in charge.

Your history is interesting.  I enjoyed it very much.  As a sailor, 
I learned another story which is not in conflict with yours at all, 
yet is much different.  It seems in older times, water was carried 
in ships in big hogsheads (barrels). Out at sea everyone gets 
horny, so after a hogshead was empty, it just sat there, except 
that the men in a sleeping area made pacts to use the hogshead.  
They drew straws. One straw was shorter than the others.  A 
standard straw was glued to the hogshead.  At night, after lights 
out, the man with the short straw got into the hogshead and sucked 
all the dicks that came to him through the bung hole in the 
barrel.  If he did his duty, no one would know which one had "his 
day in the barrel" that day.  But if a prick went in to an empty 
barrel, they lit a light, compared straws and found the short one.  
That guy was stripped, put "over the barrel" and butt-fucked (using 
HIS bunghole) by all the guys.  Hence the expressions, "I got the 
short straw," "It's my day in the barrel" for bad luck and "He's 
over the barrel," or "they've got him over a barrel" for "he 
cheated, but now he is paying for it."  I do not think these 
sailors thought of these things as homosexual, just a way to get 
off.  The next time you hear these phrases, or even "bunghole," 
remember those hot and steamy sailors who thought up this wonderful 
game.  I wonder if, occasionally a sailor skipped barrel duty just 
to be put over the barrel? I think the foregoing is true, but 
imagine that on every Friday the thirteenth a die was cast by the 
guy with the short straw.  No one else would know.  If it was a 3, 
for example.  The third prick into the hole would be cut off as it 
spurts!  The sucker could give him the option of offering his nuts 
instead, or the offer to spend every night in the barrel for a 
year.  As an extra treat, not the regular turn.  Now the long 
strawed men would also throw a die to see who went first, second, 
etc.  They would be forced to take their turns. Most losers would 
probably opt for the sucking every night for a year, second shift.  
Or maybe the sucker would decide to have sausage for midnight snack 
and cut!
