It was a short ad in the personal column. "Needed volunteers age 21 to 50 for male contraceptive study. Tuesday night 6:00p.m. Oak Hall Little Theatre." I mainly went out of curiosity. There were roughly 30 men there. Half college kids from campus and the rest older married men. I was the oldest at 50. Male mehtods of birth control now in use: (1) abstenance (2) early withdrawal (3) condom (4) vasectomy. Other Proposals: Subincision, advantages: Stimulating!! disadvantages (1) Urination, If you've ever tried a PA just imagine subincision (squat to pot) (2) Premature ejaculation (too stimulating) (3) effectiveness, keep thrusting after you squirt and som may decide to swim upstream anyway. Vas Methods, Permanent Chemical Injections: since 1964 26 different combinations of chemicals have been tried. The 2 requirements: (1) non toxic (2) causes scaring to the Vas to block it. Injectable plugs: Inject silicone to block the vas. Disadvantage: silicone might migrate, stability once injected isn't known. Shugs: (Cured silicone plugs) two beads on a stuture cord. Puncture the vas run the cord down the vas and back out leaving the beads in the vas to seal it off. HORMONE BASED methods were also mentioned. Disadvantage Testosterone can cause sterility, but needs constant injections and sperm monitoring (costly) HEAT BASED METHODS: Testes heated to 116F for 45 minutes every day for 3 weeks, then boster treatments every 3 weeks. Based on Voegeli's experiments from 1921 to 1950. three weeks produces up to 6 months sterility. Method was effective and normal offspring resulted after cesation. Artificial Cryptorchidism: advantages, effective, reversable, relatively convienient. disadvantage. retracted testicles can be uncomfortable, especially if you sit a lot. ULTRASOUND: five to 10 minutes produces up to 6 months of infertility, two treatments 48 hours apart 10 months infertility. Surge in fertility 10 weeks after fertility starts to apear and then a gradual return to normal. TWO METHODS IN FOCUS IN THIS STUDY; SHUGS: No cutting just poking and pulling. Quicker, less pain and easier reversed than vasectomy. HEATED JOCK STRAPS; Will be a long term study. We will be asking for testicle donations for disection durring study. Becasue of unknown liability from birth defects all participants will be castrated or rendered permanently sterile after the experiment. Anyone sterilized by heat will render their testicles for a study of long term effects at age 50. We will also be looking for unsterilized testicles for a control (Normal) example If anyone would be so good as to give us these donations. By the way castration is the most reliable method of male birth control. The funny thing is that all of us signed up on the spot. 10 kids for the shugs and th rest for the heat (henceforth known as jocks). After signing the consent forms we were all given plastic containers with lids and identifying numbers for the study. They wanted base line sperm counts tonight. we jerked off in the restroom in shifts. Male bonding at it's best. We all think of cum as white sticky goo, but just give it 15 minutes and it's clear. The samples were stired with a cotton swab and smeared on a microscope slide. A cover glass was put over the slide and we were all invited to see our own sperm. The microscope slides had a grid superimposed. We were asked to count the sperm in an average grid. The numbered cups were then frozen in liquid oxygen. Blood was then drawn to determine hormone count. Bob wa told that he wasn't fertileso he was out of the study. He said "I wish I had known that in High School look at all the fun I've Missed." Back in the auditorium we were all told to abstain from ejaculating until we meet again on Saturday. This will give us the maximum sperm count. probably much higher than todays if we have been sexually active in the last few days. Saturday came and we all gave our best shot. A count was taken and again our samples were frozen. We were then told that we should abstain for another week and collect samples again before proceedures were started. These samples would be kept as the prefered way to hav children to reduce liability for mutant or defective children. We were again invited to next Tuesdays initiatory meeting, since we had made the last one so productive. Tuesdays meeting had a greater attendance than ever, over a hundred new volunteers. Sperm samples were taken but they had more volunteers than they had blood sample vials and needles for. The second group would give blood samples along with sperm samples Saturday at the clinic. Saturday: The third frozen sample: These samples under reasonable conditions and monitoring would give any of us 3 more children. The standard physical and vital signs were recorded. The Ten guys for the shugs were shaved and preped. The first guy went cold turkey not knowing what to expect. With his permision the rest were allowed to watch, so they would know what to expect. Joe sat on the corner of the exam table a light box proped between his legs. a piece of clear plasticclamped down on his scrotum impbilizing his cords and showing exactly where they were. He was offered a local anesthetic but declined. A long stuture needle with three inches of Nylon line and two 1/16 inch diameter beads of silicone was threadedthrough his vas under the plastic. The plastic was loosened and the plugs pulled into place. The needle was cut off leaving a piece of line sticking out of his skin for instant removal if he wanted. This was videotaped without faces showing for future volunteers to see. Joe also got a copy. When the 10 shug volunteers were done. 16 Jock volunteers were introduced to there companions for the next severl weeks. The Jock's ween't that big or uncomfortable but they couldn't be worn under clothing. The "Jocks" had a velcro waidt band and a velcro closed suspensory pouch. Three very soft rubber rings formed a sealed neck and two hoses 4 feet long curculated water at precisely 116 F around your scrotum for 45 minutes while you sat on the toilet or in a chair that could be got wet if anything leaked. The three baseline testicle sample volunteers were next. CASTRATION!! We were anethitized for this locally. Nervouse??? You'd better believe it. They were also frozen. It's easier to slice microscopically thin that way. Two incisions took a football shaped piece out of the front of our scrotums leaving a hole 3 inches long and 1-1/2 inch wide below my penis. Blood was mopped away with gauze soaked in peroxide. It foamed a lot cauterizing any micro blood vesels so there wouldn't be bruising or hemoraging. My testicles were gently lifted, the cords savagely stabbed erncircled and tied off. It seemed like an eternity sitting there with most of my scrotum gone and both balls tied off like link sausage. Meanwhile I was irrigated with more peroxide untill there was no more foaming. The surgeon grinned at me and asked if I wanted to slice them off? Somehow in my warped state of mind I said YES!! The kid and the other guy were standing nude with hard ons watching. We wanted it that way for moral support I guess. The surgeon helped me don gloves and handed me a tray with the scalpel. Go ahead, It's your last chance to chicken out. I pulled on the right one,, No feeling, wierd. Placed the scaaaaaalpel against the cord and applied pressure but nothing happened. "Slice it" he said. Those things are tough even slicing. He said you didn't feel how tough your scrotum was. Then sliced the left one off. They seemed so big and healthy in the sac but in the numbered cup they didn't look that big. My sac was glued back together, no stitches. Then taped with butterfly closures placed accross the cut. A second pair of cotton underwear and I got dressed. I couldn't believe what I had just done. Jeff and David followed. I'd be seing them every Saturday for the next six months as we had blood samples taken. We could compare notes. Hell all the Jocks were going to be doing the same thing. Condoms?? I thought we were getting away from using these I said. "These are special non powdered, non lubricated condoms. We want every ejaculation you have for the next six weeks, for examination." We were given 5 condoms and 20 sample cups. The condoms are for intercourse and the cups are for horsing around. Drape the condom in the sperm cup sperm side up and seal it with the numbered lid. Do keep them in order. Your identification number dash ejaculation number. Next is -4 we need the samples here within 12 hours. The lab is open 24 hours a day. If you feel like 7 cups in 12 hours we want them!! Please no more than 12 hours old, but we don't need yuou to be running up here every hour. The shugs, Jocks and eunuchs were all given the same instructions for the sperm count. Wow 130 new associates every time you turned around. What do you say on the street as you start to recognize new faces? The race was on!! The shugs and the eunuchs had a quick non linear fall in sperm count and no detectable sperm after sample 15, infertility levels by the 9th shot (nine being the 6th after the procedure) We were all considered sterile within a week. The Jocks on the other hand didn't start to drop until the second week. By the third week Dave Jeff and I were getting low on testosterone. replacement therapy was offered and we tried it. It took away the sweats, but it was a lot of bother. By six months we were all off the stuff. By summer the jocks were getting disenchanted with there own private sweat huts as they started to call them. They asked about stopping, The Lawyers said OK but you know what we need. 10 of them cvame asking us eunuchs questions. We were pretty much satisfied with our decisions. Jeff was still unmarried and still in college. He was the most enthusiastic. Especially in sports. He can still have kids but on his terms. 2 testicles one at a time, you get your choice of three times. (1) when you discontinue heat treatments. (2) at peak sperm level or (3) after the decline to normal. 13 of us are now eunuchs. Mqale contraception. Yep we are sterile!! That left 6 guys every week in a jock strap and every month in for a sperm sample. The lawyers finally let them switch to shugs but if the shugs come out so do the balls. The shugs are now on annuall sperm samples and so far have had no failures. The tests have moved to Los angeles. Response has been more than hoped for. they have to limit it to 200 men a week. Last year there were 100,00 shuggs installed with no failure or complications so far. Those who opted for the shugs first can get them out at any time free of charge. But so far noone has asked for them out.
